Problem Imap Flags after restoring restoring a backup
-
Hi,
As a result of a cryptovirus I had to reformat the server and download mdaemon back from IDrive. Everything works except that by opening with Wordclient the various accounts, the users get thousands of unread emails . I have tried downloading only the various Imap.mrk files again but it does not change. I have tried checking for any read permission problems but there are none. What could have gone wrong in the backup phase ? That they got corrupted ? I would like to understand so that I can avoid the problem in the future, thanks

What version of MDaemon are you using?
Are all messages unread or only some?
Can you zip an entire mailbox that has this issue and upload it to us?

We are running the latest.
>Are all messages unread or only some?
I believe some of them not all. Also thousands of deleted emails reappared back in folder like in spam.imap or
>Can you zip an entire mailbox that has this issue and upload it to us?
I already deleted and set all email as read to allow the users to go on with their job. This evening I will download again the backup and will install it on a trial version of mdaemon just to prepare an mailbox for you. Thank you

Also these are the steps I followed:
Dowloaded latest version of Mdaemon and installed it.
Download mdaemon folders and users one (because users folder was in a different disk) from cloud
Copied mdaemon folders and users in c:\mdaemon
Changed the path of users in each account (because now we decide to put is back in the same c:\mdaemon folder)

When the files are backed up, are new files added to the backup as they are added to the mailbox on the MDaemon server?
Are files ever removed from the backup? For example, if a MSG file is added to the backup in the root of the mailbox, and then the file is moved to the Inbox\Test folder. is a copy of the file backed up in the root of the mailbox and then in the Inbox\Test folder?
What if a email is deleted, is it removed from the backup when its deleted?

I don't know I would have to do some testing. The service backs up every night when there is no one in the office who can move emails around in the meantime. When downloading the backup the service allows you to select the backup version to a specific date. Do you suspect that it may be the backup system that may have created the problem?
Also having Mailstore with customer imap structure, I would almost feel like migrating from Mailstore's imap server to Mdaemon if the problem persist.

I'm not sure what caused the issue, it was just an idea I had.

I think you are right. I've just downloaded again only one user account specifing as snapshot date the last sunday evening, the day before the virus, and now browsing in the spam.imap folder of that account I see 290K messages starting from 2021. How is it possible since they were periodically deleted from the folder?

I'm not an expert on backup software, but it sounds like the backups are cumulative. So each backup is adding content. This is fine for a while, but at some point you need to reset and do a full backup again so that you get an updated starting point. The vendor for the backup software should be able to provide a better answer.

at this point it seems clear that the problem is the backup or the way I choose to download it so I turned the question over to the IDrive staff, thank you.

Hi, unfortunately it is how you said, it is cumulative, nothing is never deleted. It is a wrong type of backup for a email server. Well, all is better than nothing but this teaches me the importance of testing backups before something ugly happend!
