Cannot install trial version

  • We own a license key for MD on one Windows 2016 server.. but trying to install a fresh copy of MD onto another Windows 2016 server (to be used with a different domain name).  I cannot get past the Customer Information screen (Name, Company, e-mail).

Click next, error is: "error talking to https://services.mdaemon.com/InstallSurvey.ashx on port 443".  Make sure that you are installing this product onto a computer with Internet access or contact sales@help.mdaemon.com.  HTTPSendRequest: error code 12029

I assure you this server has internet access.  sales@help.mdameon.com has been totally unhelpful (they wont talk to me unless I give them a key.. which of course I don't have the trial key because it wont get past the installation screen).

Internet says that httpsendrequest 12029 is due to TLS issues. I have added all the regkeys for tls1.0, tls1.1 and tls1.2..... firewall port 443 is open.  Rebooted.  no joy.

Is this because I already own a copy on the other server?

Do I have to buy a key before I can install the trial?

What sillyness is going on here?

  • My apologies for the delay in responding.

If you open a browser on the MDaemon server and go to https://services.mdaemon.com/InstallSurvey.ashx what do you get?

Is a proxy required to access the internet?  Or do you have a tool such as fiddler running?

What does the MDaemon\License\License_request.log file show is happening?  Can you post the entire log?

  • I am facing the same issues, please find the attached.

  • while browsing to https://services.mdaemon.com/InstallSurvey.ashx: <string>InstallSurvey is awake on 1987254W</string>

  • @Rahul

I'm not able to see the attachment.  Can you copy and paste the content of MDaemon\License\License_request.log

  • I just realized that the MDaemon\License\License_request.log file does not exist and is not created at that point in the install.  However, it does create a randomly named .tmp file in the %TEMP% directory that will contain the information that it is attempting to submit followed by a
"Response received from web site" section, please try to find this file, open it with your favorite text editor, and post the Response received from website section.

The easiest way to find this file is to run the install, while the error dialog for the install is still open, open the %TEMP% directory in windows explorer and sory by modified date.  The modified date of the file should be approximately the time you  clicked the Next button in the install.

  • for me, this is now moot.  I simply chose to install MD on another server and it worked fine.  the root cause here is that something on the original server is not capable of proper encryption (while the 2nd server I tried works just fine).  I know, I know all about the TLS and SSL regkeys that need to be present.. and yes I tried all that on the original server, but all to no avail.  The original server has complete Internet access and has never given any problem browsing websites... so.. its not truly an Internet access or encryption thing as far as I can see.

In my case, it might be that I have Windows Firewall turned off on the original server (for reasons outside of this).. and that MDaemon may just not be agreeable to that sort of thing.  In any case, it would be nice if the installer would give me a better sense of the true problem, instead of just blaming me for not having Internet access or encryption.... or even better, just let me install the darn thing anyway and dig into the issue deeper down the road even.  Simply stopping me from installing and moving the ball further down the field is kind of a crummy place to force me to stop.

Anyways, I'm all installed and working on another server.. so yeah.. good to go for now.
