IMAP/Outlook mail goes missing when moving folders

  • I have a user with a considerable number of folders (well over 100 in nesting trees) - they are frequently running into a problem where they will move a folder from their Sent Items or Deleted Items into a subfolder for safe keeping.  They are running into two distinct problems while doing this:

1.) The mail will move out of the source folder and never appear in the destination folder.  If I log into the web client, I can see the email in the destination - I need to then move it to another folder for them to be able to see the email again.

2.) Sometimes, less often, the email will never show up in the destination folder, even on the server - he will move it, and it just vanishes.

We have replaced his version of Office and his PC entirely, with all configurations behaving this way.  Looking to see if anyone else had a similiar issue and/or troubleshooting steps we can attempt to knock this problem out.

    Thank you.

  • When either one of these situations happens, what does MDaemon's IMAP log show is occurring?  If you enable the debug logging in Outlook, what does it show is happening?

Here are the steps I found for enabling logging in Outlook.

Enabling Troubleshooting Logging in Outlook Desktop:

    1. Openthe Outlook desktop application.
    2. Click the File tab at the top left.
    3. Select Options.
    4. In the Outlook Options dialog box, select Advanced.
    5. Scroll down to the Other section.
    6. Check the box next to Enable troubleshooting logging.
    7. Click OK to close the dialog box.
    8. RestartOutlook for the logging to take effect.
    Where Log Files are Stored:

    • The log files are stored in subfolders of the Temp folder on your computer.
    • The default location is typically c:\Users\your_username\AppData\Local\Temp

  • Thanks Arron, I'll give this a whirl - unfortunately, we were going to test this out this morning and of course everything decided to work properly, so I need to wait for it to start acting up again.
