Slow Webmail Connected over mobile Hotspot
-
Server Version: 25.0.2
We have a very unusual case. Let's see if anyone can shed some light on it...
When users connect to webmail from outside using a laptop connected to a mobile hotspot, the webmail opens fine but gradually starts to run very slowly, to the point where it won't load at all.
However, when connected directly to Wi-Fi, it works correctly. We have other services published, including VPN, all managed by our firewall. We are only having problems with mdaemon webmail; connected to hotpot general web browsing works fine, so its not slow hotspot problem. Furthermore, if it were a problem with our network or firewall, users would see their VPN connection affected as they would be constantly disconnected. Once connected over VPN, webmail works fine.
I have been searching the internet and it seems that ISPs limit the bandwidth to devices connected to the hotspot or MTU is lower. I don't know to what extent this is affecting us.
This has been happening for a few months now. We have been using mdameon for many years and no one has reported this to us until now.
Is this happening to anyone else? What can we check? Are we missing something? It's a real headache not being able to work with a mobile hotspot when someone is traveling...

Are they using HTTP or HTTPS to access webmail? Hopefully they are already using HTTPS, but if they are not, try changing to HTTPS.
There is nothing that I can think of in webmail that would intentionally slow the connection down over time.

Yes, surprisingly, that's right. From the same laptop, you turn off the mobile hotspot, connect to the Wi-Fi, and it works fine.
We use HTTPS access.
We don't understand the difference between shared Wi-Fi from a hotspot and your own router either. As mentioned, with hotspot Wi-Fi, general browsing works fine.
I even tried a direct cable between my cell phone and laptop (USB tethering hotspot) to check that it wasn't interference or anything else, and no, I still had problems.

It sounds to me like the hotspot is throttling webmail. Maybe its related to the amount of data webmail consumes.
-
I don't know, maybe.
To rule out that it's not our network, please could you try connect to your mdameon webmail via hotspot? And see if you have the same problem or not?

There is nothing in MDaemon that knows or cares if a hotspot is being used.
We have used hotspots in the past and will continue to use hotspots anytime there is a need. I've not had anyone complain about webmail being throttled and everything else working fine, however, it is up to the provider of the hotspot. All the major providers here throttle connections when you reach your data limits.
