Mailing list member editor

  • Hi!

I’m just wondering what the UP and DOWN buttons are used for on the mailing list members list — or, put another way, what is the significance of a member’s position on the list?

Thank you in advance for your reply.

  • Hello Miroslaw,

The Up and Down buttons help you with managing mailing list users' permissions when you use Groups containing local users. Mailing lists process permissions in the order in which the members of the list are saved to the mailing list. As the Help File mentions:

Select one or more members and then click these buttons to move them up or down in the list. You can also sort the list by clicking the heading of any column. Note: If you sort the list by a column heading it will override any manual sorting you have done using the Up/Down buttons.

    As an example:

    • I have a domain in MDaemon called mydomain.test
    • I create a mailing list called Events@mydomain.test.
    • I create a group called Attendees (Under Accounts | Groups & Templates)
    • I add User1 and User2 in mydomain.test to the Attendees group
    • In the Mailing List Manager I add the Attendees group to the Events mailing list with Read Only access (the members of the group can only receive mail from the mailing list, they cannot send to the list)
    • I add User1 to the mailing list individually with normal permissions (they are allowed to receive mail from the list as well as send to the list)
    • If User1 is in the Membership list below the Attendees group, then if they attempt to send email to the list from Worldclient, they will receive an error:
Error sending message! 550 5.7.1 User1@mydomain.test may not send mail to events@mydomain.test
    • If I use the buttons to move User1 above the Attendees group in the Events list membership, then they can successfully send mail to the Events mailing list, with no error.

Keep in mind, as mentioned in the Help file, that in the Membership list if you click on the column headers to alphabetically sort by that column, then it may resort the user below the group, and destroy your override. You would need to then manually move the user up the list again with the Up arrow button (Or move the Group below using the Down button).

If you mainly use the mailing lists with external/non-local user addresses, this probably won't be a feature that will affect you much.

I hope this is helpful, please let me know if you have any questions.
