Suggestions for migration and upgrade to the latest version of MDaemon
-
Hello everyone,
after many years we are considering upgrading our MDaemon system, which has remained at v14.5.7, for which the license has not been renewed for several years.
Our MDaemon server manages fewer than thirty domains and we are considering maintaining the configuration of the current on-premise system.
Questions:
- Are we forced to purchase a new license?
- In case the answer to the previous question is affirmative, how can we manage the migration of the current server to the new installation? Let me explain better: if it is not possible to renew the expired license, do we need to install a new licensed MDaemon server and transfer the domains and emails from the old server - are there any problems and/or particular situations that we need to be aware of?
Thank you.

No, you are not forced to buy a new license. You can go to https://mdaemon.com/products/mdaemon-email-server, enter your existing key and renew it.

There are no known issues upgrading from MDaemon 14.5 to 25.5. Before attempting to upgrade there are a couple things you should know. MDaemon 25.5 is only available as a 64 bit application. If you were running the 32 bit version of MDaemon 14.5, it will migrate it to a 64 bit application, but it must be on a 64 bit operating system. And MDaemon 25.5 only supports the following operating systems:
- Microsoft Windows 2025 | 2022 | 11 | 2019 | 10 | 2016 | 2012
If MDaemon 14.5 is currently running on an unsupported operating system you'll have to migrate your installation to a supported Operating system before attempting the upgrade. Here is a link to a KB article that explains how to migrate MDaemon to a new Operating System.

You may also want to take a look at the release notes to get an idea of all the changes that have occured since MDaemon 14.5. The easiest way to do that is probably to install MDaemon 25.5 on a test machine and take a look at MDaemon\Docs\Recent-History.html. This will also give you the opportunity to test MDaemon 25.5 before upgrading your live environment.
Please make a full backup of your existing MDaemon installation before you move or upgrade it. Having the backup will make recovery much easier, in the unlikley event that something goes wrong.
