Attachment(s) missing from sent messages

  • Hello everyone

We are experiencing a weird issue and I was wondering if anyone else was affected.
I'm not even sure if this is MDaemon/Connector related.

So, sometimes messages containing attachments sent by our users are being received without some or all of the attachments. Also, affected messages in the Sent Items show paper clip in the Item List (middle window), but in the Reading Pane or when you actually pop-out the message individual attachments are not there. Issue is not reproducible, I tried sending exactly the same message minut or two after the affected one (if we catch them in time) and repeated message comes through just fine.
The only other thing we've noticed about affected messages, company signature (containing text and 2 small logo images) displays empty placeholder for one or both images.
We are using MS Outlook, with fully updated MDaemon/Connector (at this moment, v26.0.1/v8.0.3).

Why do I think this could be MDaemon related? This was not happening until approx month ago, about the same time MDaemon v26/Connector v8.0.3 were released. Outlooks we use (and in particular Outlooks users which reported this to me) are different Office versions, 2019/2021/2024. Some work on Windows 11, some on Windows 10. Nothing else, network wide, was changed in the mentioned time frame.

I'm considering reverting back to v25.5.2, if nothing else, to confirm if this is v26.x related. But I'm hesitant because of the Connector situation. Pretty sure that if I go back to the last v25 (which implies Connector v8.0.2) I would have to downgrade Connector manually on every computer. Am I right about this?
Also, I can just run v25 setup over the existing v26 installation and everything will be saved?

    Regards

  • Is MDaemon Connector being used to send the message or is the recipient using it to view the message?  Or Both?  Can you upload a copy of the MSG from the user's sent items folder from their mailbox on the server?  Can you also upload a full copy of the message that was received as an EML or an MSG file?

    Yes

Instead of downgrading to MDaemon 25.5.2, try installing MDaemonConnector 8.0.2 on the client machine that is having the issue most often. The user will be prompted to update to MDaemon Connector 8.0.3.

You can download 32 bit here MDaemonConnectorClient32_802.exe

    and 64 bit here MDaemonConnectorClient64_802.exe

  • Hello Arron

Is MDaemon Connector being used to send the message or is the recipient using it to view the message? Or Both?

To send, definitively. To receive, in general, no. External recipients. Although one of the complaints was that internal message was affected as well, so Connector on both sides.

Can you upload a copy of the MSG from the user's sent items folder from their mailbox on the server?
Can you also upload a full copy of the message that was received as an EML or an MSG file?

This second one is, generally speaking, going to be a little harder, as recipients are almost exclusively external. And usually not even aware that there is a attachment missing

I've managed to find one completely local message, both sender and recipients local. Attachments cannot be seen by recipients, either in Outlook nor in webmail. How to upload them?

    Thanks

  • Sorry, I forgot to include the link...

    https://mdaemon.sharefile.com/r-rc3922c1eed334d4dbf5e34f0bd04ccd6

Please let me know the name of the file(s) that you upload.

  • Arron

Message Samples.zip uploaded. Contains readme.txt with brief description for archived messages.
Regarding Connector downgrade, is there a registry tweak to suppress automatic re-upgrade on a single computer (any user)?

    Thanks

  • Do you have any content filter rules being applied to the messages in MDaemon?

Is there anything else being done to the message after its sent?

Can you upload all of the MDaemon logs that show Message 1 being processed by MDaemon?

Do you have anything that sits between MDaemon and the email clients (such as an AV gateway) that could be altering the messages?

If you use your favorite text editor to edit the MSG file that you sent me in the recipients mailbox on the server and go to line 250, it should look like this:

    p;</o:p></p></div></body></html>=0D=0A------=_NextPart_002_0139_01DCC826.F663A470--

Change it to look like this:

    p;</o:p></p></div></body></html>=0D=0A
    ------=_NextPart_002_0139_01DCC826.F663A470--

Save the file, and then rename it by adjusting the last number in the file name.  Then go to Outlook, change to a different folder, then back to the folder where the message resides.  Does the message appear correct now?

Quite a few CF rules, but I don't think these messages triggered any of them.

Do you have anything that sits between MDaemon and the email clients

If by "between MDaemon and the email clients" you mean between MDaemon and sending email client, then no.
For the receiving end, also no when they are internal (like sample message 1). For the outgoing, external messages, yes, they go through email gateway.

All of the logs of April 9th uploaded (2026-04-09_Logs.zip)
After that correction all of the attachments are visible.

    Thanks

  • Hello,

Just letting you know that this might be a wider issue. We've been advised of the same issue impacting one of our customers. Behaviour is the same as described by Aleksandar (Emails that are sent are sometimes received without one or more attachments, and the same behaviour with the paperclip icon in Outlook). They advise it's been happening for several weeks, and that it impacts multiple users on their server.

One affected user is running Outlook Version 2603, build 19822.20182; MDaemon Connector 8.0.3. Their MDaemon server is slightly behind on 26.0.0.

  • @Aleksandar Can you upload your signature files for the signatures that MDaemon is adding?  They should be found at c:\mdaemon\domains\$DOMAIN$.

  • @Alex Can you provide a copy of an MSG file a message that has the issue?  A copy from the senders sent items along with a copy from the recipients mailbox would be helpful.  Also logs that show MDaemon processing the message would be helpful.

Is MDaemon adding a signature to the message?  If it is, can you also provide a copy of the signature files from c:\mdaemon\domains\$DOMAIN$?

  • Uploaded
signature MDaemon.zip -> signatures in MDaemon. But they are not in use. We are using individual signatures, defined in every Outlook
    signatures individual.zip -> individual signatures from C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Signatures

  • @Aleksandar Have you downgraded to MDaemonConnector 8.0.2 on any machines to see if the problem continues?

  • Have you downgraded to MDaemonConnector 8.02

No, I haven't. No one reported anything today (except one circular internal message to all users which "lost" images in the signature, but had no attachments).
I can do that remotely, but, of course, we would have to wait at least untill Monday for the results. If you'd want me to do that, please advise how can I disable auto-upgrade notifications, without having to login as particular user

  • We have not found the root cause of the issue yet, but it looks like this may be an MDaemon issue instead of an MDaemon Connector issue. Until we know more, I do not think downgrading is worth the effort.

If you'd like to try downgrading anyways, you can turn off automatic updates by opening Outlook, go to the MDaemon Connector Tool bar, click Account and then select the Miscellaneous tab. Uncheck the box for Enable Automatic Updates.

We are still investigating and will let you know as soon as we know more.

  • Until we know more, I do not think downgrading is worth the effort.

    OK, waiting

...you can turn off automatic updates by opening Outlook...

Yes, I'm aware of that, but not sure that if I turn 'Enable Automatic Updates' off through admin account if it would work for any user logged on to that machine.
In any case, I've seen just this morning that one of the affected computers was on Connector v8.0.2 all the time

  • Can you upload a copy of \MDaemon\App\cfilter.ini, \MDaemon\SecurityPlus\AntiVirus.ini, \MDaemon\SecurityPlus\Ikarus\scan.server\scanserver.json, and \MDaemon\SecurityPlus\ClamAVPlugin\conf\clamd.conf?

Are you using Ikaurs and/or ClamAV?

  • Are you using Ikaurs and/or ClamAV?

    Yes, both.
    Uploaded Files 20260420.zip.
Please note, scanserver.json is from \MDaemon\SecurityPlus\Ikarus\scan.server\conf

  • Thank you for the additional files.

Can you confirm that you are not using the signature configured in MDaemon that can be access in Remote Administration by going to Main | Domain Manager | domain.com | Edit | Client Signatures?  These signatures can be pushed to MDaemon Connector clients and then the client can insert the signature.  If the signatures are not in use in MDaemon and not being used by the clients, I'd like to have you remove the signatures from MDaemon.  Make a backup of the files from c:\mdaemon\domains\domain.com\ and theen delete all the text in the Client signature field at Main | Domain Manager | domain.com | Edit | Client Signatures In our testing this will work around the issue.

Please let us know if this also works around the issue for you.

  • Hello Arron, we have the same troubles with the attachments since update to the 26.0.0 version. We proof the signature in the configuration of mdaemon server but all is empty in the signature options (client and not client). The problem is not reportet from all the users. Also running the OC Version 8.0.2 and the actual 26.0.0 or 26.0.1 version of mdeamon is no solution. Any other tips?

  • Can you confirm that you are not using the signature configured in MDaemon

    Yes, I can.

If the signatures are not in use in MDaemon and not being used by the clients, I'd like to have you remove the signatures from MDaemon

    Removed

Please let us know if this also works around the issue for you.

    Sure
