Distribution Lists and SendFromListName identity

  • Hello everybody,

We experience problem with DMARC validation on groups with external members.

Our domain's DMARC policy is very strict and when sending email to groups with external users (gmail.com, hotmail.fr ...), the email is rejected because DMARC doesn't validate.

It seems it doesn't validate because there a misalignment in the from address.

I found the SendFromListName parameter : when enabled, mails are sent from the group's email address, and SPF, DKIM and DMARC are valid.

The problem is not only the email address is rewritten, but the "Display Name" is also rewritten...

Is there a way to rewrite the mail address (with group's address), but to keep "John Appleseed via list@domain.tld" style ?

  • Are you sure it is your DMARC policy causing the issue?  Typically this issue occurs with the domain of the original sender publishing a restrictive DMARC policy.

Try this, edit the mailing list and on the Headers dialog disable Replace 'From' List's name and email address and enable Replace 'From' email address with list's email address if message is sent from a domain that publishes a restrictive DMARC policy.

This will only change the From header when the original sending domain publishes a restrictive DMARC policy but it appends 'via List' to the Display name.

Are senders with restrictive policies able to post to the list?

  • @Arron The problem we are facing is only when our users are sending to the list with another domain of ours (we have many domains on MDaemon).

For example : we have 2 domains on MDaemon : domain1.com and domain2.com.

    A list list@domain1.com with members j.dupond@domain1.com, martine@domain2.com, alex.terieur@gmail.com, alin.terieur@yahoo.fr

"Replace 'From' email address with list's email address if message is sent from a domain that publishes a restrictive DMARC policy" is enabled.

=> When j.dupond@other-domain.com is writing to list@domain.com : no problem.

=> But, if martine@domain2.com, Gmail and Yahoo users are receiving the email in the Spam folder, because this is a misalignment between domain1.com  (list domain) and domain2.com (real sender).

It seems MDaemon doesn't detect restrictive DMARC policy for the domains it's hosting itself.

The only way to fix it, is to enable SendFromListName.

  • You are correct, currently the only way to work around the issue is to use the option to Replace 'From' with List's name and email address.  I've asked the development team to review the options and consider changes for future versions.
